Walmart Hiring Experience
Overview
Walmart’s hiring process impacts millions globally, but friction in the external candidate application created bottlenecks that slowed hiring managers and frustrated applicants. With 2.3 million associates worldwide and millions of annual applicants, Walmart needed a streamlined, accessible solution to speed hiring while expanding the candidate pool.
Our redesign focused on simplifying the candidate journey by integrating store and warehouse applications, surfacing key job details like pay and shifts, and improving navigation and status transparency. Leveraging Walmart’s Living Design System, we created a mobile-first, accessible experience that supports Walmart’s scale and diversity goals.
Walmart Hiring Experience
The Challenge
The existing application was fragmented and confusing, forcing candidates to apply separately for store and warehouse roles despite overlapping job functions. The flow was out of order relative to user expectations, designs were inaccessible to many users, and the system limited the candidate pool unintentionally. Hiring managers lacked clear, actionable candidate data, slowing decision-making.
Walmart needed a unified, intuitive application that could support millions of applicants, reduce drop-off, and provide clear status updates. The challenge was balancing technical constraints, legacy systems, and accessibility requirements, all while delivering a seamless experience that respects diverse user needs and hiring workflows.
Walmart Hiring Experience
The Solution
We restructured the application flow to open with a mobile-friendly, integrated map showing nearby store and warehouse locations, enabling candidates to explore and apply to multiple roles simultaneously. Job cards now highlight pay and shift details, reflecting how users shop for jobs and helping them make faster, informed choices.

A phased approach addressed differing shift structures for stores and warehouses, while a streamlined navigation and status tracker gave candidates clear visibility into their application progress. Close collaboration with cross-functional teams ensured scalable, reusable components aligned with Walmart’s Living Design System and accessibility standards. Iterative user testing refined the experience for clarity and ease.

Performance Results
The redesigned application cut candidate drop-off by simplifying the process and surfacing critical information up front. Early feedback praised the clarity of the job selection and status tracking features. The mobile-first approach expanded reach to on-the-go applicants, while accessibility improvements made the experience usable for hundreds of thousands previously excluded.
Cut average application time by 50% (from 60 to 30 minutes)
Increased candidate pool positions by 25%
Improved usability for an estimated 100,000+ applicants with disabilities annually
This redesign sets a new standard for Walmart’s hiring experience, enabling faster, smarter recruitment at scale. By uniting design innovation with technical feasibility and accessibility, the project supports Walmart’s commitment to associate growth and operational excellence.
