Extra Space Enterprise Design
Overview
Extra Space Storage, one of the largest third-party self-storage brands in the U.S., faced a fragmented and inconsistent digital presence across its website, mobile app, sales software, and kiosk systems. Despite decades of success, the company’s UX maturity was still emerging, limiting its ability to deliver a unified, accessible experience at scale.
As design lead, I spearheaded the creation of a comprehensive design system and enterprise design strategy that established consistency, accessibility, and scalability across all digital touchpoints. This foundational work enabled Extra Space to mature from a fragmented UX approach toward an integrated, user-centered design culture.

The Challenge
The company’s digital products suffered from inconsistent branding, outdated interfaces, and inaccessible design elements. Brand guidelines were not digitally accessible, design components were used inconsistently, and no enterprise-wide UX standards existed. This fragmented experience hindered customer engagement and operational efficiency.
The challenge was to build a scalable design ecosystem that could unify multiple products —from the public-facing website and mobile app to internal sales and account management tools— while respecting legacy constraints and preparing for future growth. The solution needed to balance brand integrity, accessibility compliance, and cross-team collaboration.
Extra Space Enterprise Design
The Solution
We began by conducting a comprehensive design audit and SWOT analysis to identify gaps and opportunities. The flagship project was a full redesign of the website, the primary customer touchpoint, which set the tone for the enterprise design system. Working with an external agency, we defined core design elements—colors, typography, buttons, grids—and created detailed documentation to ensure consistent application.

Next, a reusable component library was developed that scaled across products, including the mobile app and internal sales software. Close collaboration with development teams ensured smooth implementation and knowledge transfer. We phased the rollout, incorporating feedback from users and stakeholders to continuously refine the system. Accessibility improvements were embedded throughout to support all users.
